Today I attended the opening of an new school for an old profession: “Opleiding Meester Coupeur“ in Amsterdam.  School for tailors.

Tailors are needed urgently. Due to outsourcing of all the making of  fashion the profession is allmost exstinced. Along with other fashion  related professions and specific craftmentship.

I grew up in a arts and crafts family. My mother, Karolien van Ommen, has been a hatmaker for the Haute Couture.  In the sixties she used to work for famous designers, making the hats to go with the designer outfits. Every piece was unique, tailored a piece of art. Real Haute Couture.
